Central AC vs. Ductless Mini Splits
There are several ways to keep a home cool during the summer, and regardless of the style of air conditioning system present in a home, it certainly is appreciated. That being said, there are certain advantages to cooling with different technologies, and understanding the differences between cooling systems can help homeowners determine which type is right for them when they get a chance to upgrade.
Here is a quick guide to the two main styles of cooling systems that are common in homes now, in addition to some other options homeowners may have questions about. By learning about each type of AC system, homeowners will better understand the benefits of each. After learning the two main types of systems, this article will briefly touch on other common but less effective options for cooling a home.
Advantages of Central Air Conditioning
The majority of the homes in the US are cooled by a type of air conditioning system called central air conditioning. Central air conditioning is a strategy that is used to cool the entire home to a uniform temperature. To make this possible, central AC uses a central cooling unit and blower to push the cool air through ductwork that is routed to each room in the home.
Central AC is prized because it is a hands-off solution to climate control. By simply setting one central thermostat, the home’s temperature and humidity are controlled with very little need for interference, especially with a smart thermostat. Central air conditioning systems also operate very quietly. Additionally, since most homes already have ductwork installed, replacing a central AC is easy and doesn’t require installing a new type of system.
Ductless Mini Split Benefits
Ductless mini splits are different from central AC. They are increasing in popularity, so more people are familiar with them even if they aren’t installed in their homes. At its core, a ductless air conditioner uses similar principles to provide cooling power to a house. The main difference is that compressed refrigerant is pumped to individual cooling heads that cool different rooms or zones in the home instead of using ductwork to distribute air.
Ductless mini splits are perfect for retrofitting homes that have no ductwork installed. Instead of installing new air ducts around the house, two small copper lines and some wiring are run to each zone. Once installed, homeowners can individually control each indoor unit, allowing for greater flexibility and the ability to set different temperatures in different zones, which can lead to energy savings without compromising comfort. Additionally, ductless mini-split systems are energy efficient and don’t experience energy loss in the air ducts like central AC systems.
Other Cooling Options
Central AC and ductless mini splits are the two main choices for hardwired cooling systems. However, some people still use other options to keep their homes cool. Many people use window AC units to cool their homes without installing air conditioning. However, window units only cool certain zones and not an entire house, and when needing multiple units to cool an entire home, they are not cost-effective. They also block the window they are used in, blocking any view and preventing the window from being opened.
Another choice that is similar to window units is portable air conditioners. Portable AC units also cannot cool an entire home and are an inefficient choice for cooling a whole home compared to the installed air conditioning systems. However, portable air conditioners can be moved from room to room and are a good option for cooling a space that isn’t part of the home’s air conditioning system, like a garage or shed.
