Three Signs That Indicate It May Be Time for an AC Replacement

Summer is here, and with the temperatures rising, most people are relying on their air conditioners more and more. For some, this confirms that their ACs, despite the long hiatus, are still in great shape and likely to help them withstand the brutal heat of summer without a hitch. But for others, the AC could be telling them instead that their unit is on its last legs and may need to be replaced. If any of the following signs are currently present at home, homeowners should call an HVAC technician to inspect it because it may be time for air conditioning replacement.

Foul Odors and Odd Sounds

smellAn air conditioner is supposed to provide comfort and cooling to the occupants, and modern iterations of ACs are meant to run as quietly as possible - almost as if it wasn’t even there at all. So any funky smells or strange noises from the AC are signs of something amiss. A strong chemical smell, for example, may indicate a refrigerant leak. Burning smells can point to electrical issues or overheating, while a musty smell could be a sign that mold is growing in the unit or within the ductwork.

A variety of sounds can also be an indicator of a malfunctioning AC. Loud buzzing or vibrating sounds can signal an electrical problem while shrieking noises can point to an issue with the fan motor. Other strange noises may be related to loose parts, refrigerant leaks, or a failing compressor. Whenever strange noises or smells are noticed from the AC or vents, it’s essential to have a professional determine what the cause is and if repair or replacement is necessary.

Rising Energy Bills

As air conditioners age, they increasingly become candidates for air conditioner replacement instead of repair. The logic behind it is simple and is something even homeowners without AC experience understand intuitively - daily use wears down an AC unit. It becomes less energy efficient and more susceptible to breakdowns as it wears down and ages. This means it costs more in repair costs and energy bills, as a decrease in energy efficiency translates to higher electric consumption.

Aside from indicating an old air conditioner needing replacement, high energy bills can also point to neglected maintenance or an AC with a broken or malfunctioning component. Depending on the issue causing the loss of efficiency, HVAC contractors may recommend replacing the air conditioner, conducting AC maintenance, or making repairs.

Inadequate Airflow

While most homeowners’ complaints of a failing AC are centered on its lack of cooling, which is an obvious sign of problems, some homeowners experience problems with weak airflow even as their units continue to provide cool air. The problem usually revolves around the fact that despite cool air coming out of the unit, enough air doesn’t seem to be coming out to circulate inside the room and cool the entire space properly.

There could be many issues causing the lack of airflow. It could have something to do with a malfunctioning compressor. In other instances, it could be pointing to a problem with the ductwork. Either way, calling a professional HVAC technician is vital to diagnose the problem and recommend the best solution. It may be possible to fix with repairs, but if the pros deem the unit beyond repair or the unit is already nearing the end of its lifespan, replacing the air conditioner may be the best fix.
